What is the difference between Bioethanol, Biofuel & Biodiesel?

Bioethanol is ethanol fuel (ethyl alcohol, the same stuff we drink) made from plant matter (as with most ethanol). Currently most of it is made from corn, but in the future more and more of it will be made from cheaper organic material such as grass and various plant waste. It can be used as a fuel similar to gasoline, but is commonly used as a gasoline additive to minimize emissions. It can also be used as a total gasoline replacement to power our cars with only minor modifications to a standard gasoline engine.

Biodiesel is basically a vegetable oil used instead of diesel fuel to run unmodified diesel engines. Generally, the used fryer oil from fast food restaurants is used by simply filtering it and putting it in the gas tank of a regular diesel vehicle.

Both of these are biofuels. They are renewable, unlike petroleum, and therefore do not run the risk of running out. They also both burn cleanly and are not nearly as harmful to our environment as petroleum. Their major downside is that it is not currently possible to produce them in large enough quantities to meet our current energy needs, and by attempting do so, we would be using our limited food supply to produce this fuel instead of feeding the population.
